Mercury retrograde: what it is and the dates

Three or sometimes four times a year, Mercury appears to slow down, stop and move backward against the background stars for about three weeks. Astrologers call this Mercury retrograde, and it is probably the best known astrological event of all.

Below you will find what actually happens in the sky, every retrograde period of 2026 and 2027, and the advice astrologers traditionally give for these weeks.

What is happening in the sky

Mercury circles the Sun in about 88 days, much faster than Earth. When Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun, our changing angle of view makes it look as if it is moving backward along the zodiac. The planet never actually reverses; the backward motion is apparent, like a slower car seeming to drift backward as you overtake it.

The moments when Mercury seems to stand still are called stations. The station retrograde opens the period and the station direct closes it. The dates below are those stations, found by tracking the exact moment Mercury's apparent speed changes from forward to backward and back again.

Mercury retrograde dates for 2026 and 2027

Each period lasts about three weeks. The sign is where Mercury stations; when two signs are shown, Mercury backs out of one sign into the previous one during the retrograde.

Dates are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The moment is the same everywhere, but the local date can differ: in the Americas an event listed early in a UTC day often falls on the evening before.

The shadow periods

Many astrologers also watch the "shadow": the stretch of sky Mercury covers three times. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct, about two weeks before the retrograde. The post-shadow lasts until Mercury climbs back to the degree where it turned retrograde, about two weeks after. Themes of the retrograde are often said to start and fade gradually across these weeks.

What tradition links to it

In astrology Mercury rules communication, thinking, short trips, paperwork, trade and devices. During its retrograde, those areas are said to run less smoothly: messages go astray, plans need a second look, schedules slip and old topics come back.

Astrologers like to say the retrograde favours words that start with "re": review, revise, repair, reconnect, rethink and return.

How people use these weeks

Nothing in astrology says you must cancel plans. The common advice is simply to add margin:

  • back up your phone and files, and update software before the station;
  • read contracts twice and confirm dates, addresses and bookings;
  • allow extra time for travel and deliveries;
  • use the period to finish, edit and revisit projects instead of launching new ones;
  • reach out to people you have lost touch with: reconnection is the classic upside.
